Minnesota's Natural Landscapes
While Minnesota is coined the Land of 10,000 Lakes, the state’s ecological systems include far more than its iconic bodies of water.
Minnesota's Wildlife Action Plan 2025-2035: Conserving Habitats and Biodiversity examines habitats across the state, outlining conservation strategies for the plants, animals, and landscapes unique to Minnesota. Published by the Department of Natural Resources, the plan updates the strategies outlined in the 2005 and 2015 action plans.
While extensive, the report is “designed in a modularized way with the information seeker — the reader — in mind” allowing you to explore topics of interest from public engagement to conservation strategies for vernal pools, birds, coniferous forest wetland, and more. Accompanying the report is an interactive website featuring charts, maps, and data.
For those interested in urban habitats, another recent report is the legislatively funded St. Anthony Falls Study: Final Report. Providing a risk and hazard assessment of St. Anthony Falls, the report notes how the falls are “an interconnected system — neither exclusively a natural feature nor a work of human engineering.”
Specifically, the study addresses the subterranean cutoff wall, a novel technology constructed from 1874-1876 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The cutoff wall which provides stability has remained “untouched since 1877.” Almost entirely obscured from view, it poses challenges for hazard monitoring. The study, accounting for this and other factors, offers recommended actions regarding the potential, but not imminent hazard of failure at St. Anthony Falls.
