Hunting in Minnesota
Minnesota boasts a rich hunting tradition, with numerous game animal seasons either currently underway or approaching quickly. Recognizing the vital role hunting plays in the state’s culture and economy, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) regularly publishes comprehensive reports to support and promote wild game conservation.
The DNR’s 2025-2030 Duck Action Plan outlines four primary objectives: Increase the amount of protected wetland, grassland and forest habitat for ducks; Maintain, enhance and restore wetland, grassland, and forest habitat for ducks; Increase opportunities for and participation in outdoor recreation related to ducks and their habitat; Increase public awareness and appreciation of wetland conservation for ducks and people. The DNR plans to annually report on the progress and success using the performance indicators identified in the plan.
A complementary report now in its forty-eighth year of publication, Status of Wildlife Populations not only tracks wildlife population trends but also provides extensive hunting and trapping statistics that help guide state game management and hunter expectations.
One of the unfortunate aspects of hunting is exposure to ticks. The University of Minnesota just released the “Minnesota Tick Dashboard,” funded by the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. This interactive dashboard allows you to display tick records by county and by tick species. Other statistics include host associations, and monthly and yearly tick records.
