Board of Medical Practice

Active dates:1992 -

Examines, licenses, and registers medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy, physician assistance, midwives, respiratory care practitioners, and physical therapists in Minnesota; enforces the Medical Practices Act.

In 1883 the University of Minnesota's medical department faculty were organized into a "Board of Examiners" and authorized to issue certificates to practice medicine in the state. Four years later, that law was repealed and the "State Board of Medical Examiners" was created by General Laws of Minnesota 1887, chapter 9, which provided for a nine-member board serving three-year appointments.

The Board's name changed to the "Board of Medical Practice" in 1992 (see Laws of Minnesota 1991, chapter 106, section 6) and membership changed to 16, appointed to 4-year terms.

16 members (10 licensed M.D. physicians, 1 licensed Doctor of Osteopathy, and 5 public members); appointed by governor; 4-year terms; per diem and expenses; members file with Ethical Practices Board.
