Asian Carp
There is no question that in Minnesota, the Land of 10,000 Lakes, fishing and other water uses are important to the economic, ecological, and social health of the state. That’s why the looming invasion of “Asian carp” is a primary concern for the state.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) began testing for environmental DNA (eDNA) in the state’s waters for the presence of Asian carp. The DNR’s Frequently Asked Questions about environmental DNA (eDNA) and Asian carp in Minnesota rivers explains eDNA, “All fish, including Asian carp, shed DNA material into the environment through mucus and excrement. DNA floats on the water surface and accumulates in eddies and backwater areas. The presence of individual fish species can be detected by collecting water samples in those areas and filtering them in the lab for DNA.” Silver and bighead carp have already been caught on the lower Minnesota stretch of the Mississippi and two bighead carp have been caught on the lower part of the St. Croix. The eDNA test was used to determine if Asian carp have spread north in these two rivers.
The MN Department of Natural Resources recently released the study, “eDNA Surveillance of Asian Carp on the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers”, showing evidence of silver carp in the St. Croix River, but not the upper Mississippi River. Subsequent electro shocking and netting have not turned up further evidence of these carp in the eDNA surveillance area.
Efforts to limit the spread of Asian carp are under way. The 2011 First Special Session bonding bill, Chapter 12, contains 16 million dollars to renovate Mississippi River Coon Rapids Dam to serve as a barrier to invasive fish. The Coon Rapids Regional Dam Commission had recently recommended in a February 28, 2011 report that it was important to “begin the work on the dam refurbishment as soon as possible.” Efforts to control and limit the spread of invasive species, including Asian carp, will surely continue.
