Smart Grid
Green jobs, energy independence, climate change, renewable energy – these are words that everyone is hearing these days. One of the proposed ways to address these issues, in part, is through “smart grid technology”. What is a “smart grid”? Definitions vary from one engineer to another but generally a smart grid of high-voltage transmission lines is more automated, allows for two way movement of power, is more stable and efficient and is self repairing in the event of a power disruption.
Xcel Energy, along with six other utilities, recently commissioned a study to examine upgrade scenarios to the high voltage transmission lines that cross 11 Midwest states and their relation to expanding renewable energy sources, specifically wind energy. The “SMARTransmission” study’s “primary goal is to develop a transmission plan that ensures reliable service, is environmentally friendly, and supports state and national energy policies”.
The U.S. Dept. of Energy also released a study this year, The Smart Grid: An Estimation of the Energy and CO2 Benefits. “This report articulates nine mechanisms by which the smart grid can reduce energy use and carbon impacts associated with electricity generation and delivery.”
Smart grid has been covered extensively in the media. Recent articles include, “Smart Grid offers the promise of 21st century energy utility” (MN Journal, May/June 2010), “The 21st Century Grid: Can We Fix the Infrastructure That Powers Our Lives?” (National Geographic, July 2010), “The Great Green Grid: A Smart Grid That Lets Us Better Control Our Energy Use May Finally Be Ready to Launch” (E: The Environmental Magazine, July/August 2010), and “A 'Smart' Electrical Grid Could Secure the Energy Supply” (U.S. News & World Report, April 2010). The U.S. News article notes that the phrase “smart grid” was coined by a professor at the University of Minnesota, Massoud Amin.
