Taconite Dreams
Minnesota's Iron Range can now claim a Nobel Laureate as its native son. And though Bob Dylan has sung about Minnesota's northland on and off since the 1960s, the region's mining history goes back much further. Taconite Dreams: The Struggle to Sustain Mining on Minnesota's Iron Range, 1915-2000, by Jeffery Manuel, chronicles the region's history, from economic changes to global shifts in industrial production, and contextualizes the work on Minnesota's Iron Range with the sweeping changes to industrialization in the twentieth century. The IRRRB's most recent biennial report offers a more current look at the mining industry, with a particular focus on additional economic developments in the region.
The Iron Range isn't the only region in the state concerned with job creation and economic development. The East Central Regional Development Commission and the Region Five Development Commission have recently issued reports on their local economies. And for a broader look at these issues, Minnesota Management and Budget's statewide Budget and Economic Forecast report for 2016 is also available through the library.
Two other recent reports on work and job creation focus on two particular groups. Minnesota Youth at Work Competitive Grants details grants made by the Department of Economic and Employment Development to youth in the state. And the Council of State Governments and NCLS' Work Matters: A Framework for States on Workforce Development for People with Disabilities report outlines strategies for states to increase participation in the workforce by people with disabilities.
