Pharmaceutical Payments to Practitioners
A recent MinnPost article, “How U Student with MS Came to Doubt Her Neurologist's Motives”, relates the story of a Minnesota woman’s firsthand experience with the issue of pharmaceutical payments to health practitioners. Concerned about her neurologist’s financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry, the patient turned to a state website that tracks pharmaceutical company payments. While a national database is set to debut in 2013, the Minnesota Legislature passed a payment reporting requirement back in 1993.
The Minnesota Board of Pharmacy has payment data back to 1997 on their website: Payments to Practitioners Documents and an informative FAQ: MINNESOTA STATUTES § 151.461 – GIFTS TO PRACTITIONERS PROHIBITED Frequently Asked Questions.
