Minnesota Ranks Highest in Interlibrary Loan Access
Did you know that the Legislative Reference Library can borrow any article, book, or report you need from nearly any library in the country? The Legislative Reference Library participates in the Minitex network, as well as a national interlibrary loan network, connecting legislators and legislative staff to a vast array of resources. You can always ask library staff for books and reports that are not in our collection and take advantage of this service.
Minitex is an information and resource sharing program of the Minnesota Office of Higher Education and the University of Minnesota. Minitex can trace its history back to a pilot project in 1969 that developed an early system to share the library resources of the University of Minnesota with libraries throughout the state. It was funded by the state legislature in 1971. Today, the materials library patrons request are retrieved by Minitex staff from the libraries at the UMN-Twin Cities campus, or from libraries in the Minitex network—which includes Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Minitex has a reciprocal agreement with Wisconsin libraries as well. They share resources with libraries of other not-for-profit institutions, such as academic and public libraries outside of the Minitex region. Whenever possible, articles are electronically delivered directly to patrons and books are delivered via a courier or UPS within 24 hours.
The University of Minnesota consistently tops the charts in lending and has been nationally recognized for its innovations in rapid, effective resource sharing to all citizens. The October 6, 2017 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education includes their annual list highlighting 4-year institutions with the most interlibrary loans. Data for 2014-2015 ranks the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities first for public institutions. The UMN's exceptional lending unit provided 134,538 items during that period.
