Health Insurance

During this time of transformational change to health care in the United States, health insurance costs and accessibility are likely to be at the forefront of the 2017 legislative session. A timely addition to our collection this month is Minnesota Health Market Review 2016: Part One by Allan Baumgarten. This incredibly useful annual publication reports on the financial metrics and enrollment trends and strategies of Minnesota health plan companies. Read a summary to learn more. Health Market Review is issued in two parts, the second of which will be published yet this year. Part Two presents an analysis of the provider systems in the state, covering hospital finances and utilization. Minnesota Health Market Review was first published in 1990 by Citizens League, a Minnesota nonprofit public policy organization, and this is the 27th annual edition.

State Legislative Healthcare and Insurance Issues: 2015 Annual Report by Blue Cross Blue Shield Association was released in November. This report summarizes the findings of their annual survey sent to each of the independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans across the country, highlighting important state-specific health laws of the 2015 legislative sessions. The report identifies several trends during the 2015 legislative sessions, including the topic of Health Care Exchanges. Cost-sharing and step therapy restrictions were discussed in a majority of states.

The U.S. Census Bureau has just released Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2015 providing statistics on health insurance coverage in the United States in 2015, changes in health insurance coverage rates between 2014 and 2015, as well as changes in health insurance coverage rates between 2013 and 2015.
