Recounts
The 2010 election is over but the victor in the Governor’s race is yet to be determined. Minnesota Statutes 204C.35 provides for an automatic recount when the difference in votes cast “is less than one-half of one percent of the total number of votes counted for that office.” A few legislative races met the criteria for automatic recounts as well.
Staff at the Legislative Reference Library attempt to proactively keep abreast of issues that will be of interest to the Minnesota Legislature and others. The day after the election, we pulled together many of our materials on past recounts in order to be prepared for the onslaught of questions on this topic.
One item, Recounts: Federal, State, and Judicial Offices by Matt Gehring from the House Research Department, provides a nice overview of the recount process in Minnesota. Another item in our collection, Recount by Ronald F. Stinnett and Charles H. Backstrom, provides an analysis of the recount that occurred in the 1962 Governor’s race. We’ve recently added This is Not Florida: How Al Franken Won the Minnesota Senate Recount by Jay Weiner to our collection.
We’ve also compiled several notebooks with news clippings and other articles related to recounts. We have a notebook related to the 1962 Governor’s election recount. Another one deals with the 2008 Franken-Coleman United States Senate recount. Though not comprehensive, our Minnesota legislative race recounts notebook provides insights into a variety of legislative recounts.
