Copper-Nickel Studies and Sulfide Mining
A long-awaited, 1800-page supplemental draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for the proposed PolyMet Mining Project is expected to be released on
December 6, 2013. The supplemental DEIS is the culmination of four years of additional research and analysis of the proposed sulfide mine after an earlier
draft environmental impact statement was deemed inadequate by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Sulfide mining extracts precious metals including copper and nickel from sulfide ores. Sulfide mining in northern Minnesota has been lauded for its
economic benefits for the region by some, but others are highly critical of the potential long-term environmental risks of this type of mining.
Decades before Minnesota's current environmental review of sulfide mining, the state invested millions in researching the issue. The Legislative Reference
Library has been steadily digitizing the hundreds of reports that were issued in the late 1970s as part of the Minnesota Regional Copper-Nickel Study.
