Metropolitan Council - 40 Years of Service
The Twin Cities Metropolitan Council was created in 1967 at the urging of many local government, business and civic leaders. The Council was designed to deal with the unique needs of a rapidly growing area encompassing Minneapolis, St. Paul and environs. The Council's charge: to plan for the orderly and economical development of the seven-county area, and coordinate the delivery of certain services that couldn't be provided by any one city or county.
To celebrate 40 years of regional planning, the Metropolitan Council has produced two 2007 publications on their history. A pamphlet and DVD cover the history of the Metropolitan Council and its involvement in regional planning activities in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan area, including metropolitan transit (buses and light rail), sewage treatment, regional parks and trails, land use, and urban growth. The DVD is a co-production of the Metropolitan Council and Twin Cities Public Television.
