Fracking
The search for new energy supplies often competes with environmental concerns. Hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” is an economical method used to extract natural gas from shale rock but also has the potential to create environmental problems. As environmental and health concerns grow, states are looking at ways to address these issues.
In "Fracking fracas" (State Legislatures, May 2012), it is reported that “at least 137 bills in 24 states have recently been introduced that specifically address fracking”. Five states have enacted legislation this session. The National Conference of State Legislatures has also just published Natural Gas Development and Hydraulic Fracturing: A Policymaker’s Guide (June 2012). This guide gives an overview of the issues and detailed information on the states’ efforts to regulate the process.
According to the article "The Fracking Rules" in the May/June 2012 issue of Capitol Ideas, some of the primary ways states have addressed the use of hydraulic fracturing are chemical disclosure, moratoriums, bans, and new regulations.
