Public Health Resources

Virus image by PIRO4D from Pixabay Public health has been on everyone's mind recently and the library has pulled together recent Minnesota legislative action, reports, articles, and more in a new Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) webpage as part of our MN Issue guides series. It is updated regularly and includes information from all three branches of government in Minnesota.

One of the reports on this guide is Minnesota Management and Budget's COVID-19 Minnesota Fund Expenditure Report. It is the first in a series of reports for this unique fund, which is set to expire on May 11, 2020. It reports on the expenditures from this fund, which are related to the COVID-19 outbreak and the peacetime emergency. The report also explains the role of the Legislative COVID-19 Response Commission in relation to this fund.

The Library's public health-related reports expand beyond COVID-19. The list this month includes the 2020 release of the American Cancer Society's Cancer Facts and Figures, which provides a comprehensive national view of cancer rates and related issues such as financial costs and disparities.

In addition to national data, the Minnesota Department of Health is required by Minnesota Statutes 144.672, subd. 2 to report to the legislature on incidence of cancer in Minnesota. These reports are available online since 2003 and are now also reported in the Minnesota Cancer Reporting System (MCRS).

MDH's Cancer Reporting System is just one example of tracking public health in Minnesota. MDH has a Minnesota Public Health Data Access Portal which provides data about other diseases and illnesses and a page dedicated to resources related to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
