    Attention to Green Jobs

    Thomas Friedman considers himself an optimist. In his newest book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded, he claims the answer to both catastrophic global warming and economic challenges from abroad is immediate attention to growing a green economy. He advocates reinvigorated research and entrepreneurship around "abundant, cheap, clean, reliable electrons."

    In another high-profile book, The Green-Collar Economy, author Van Jones advocates government policy that promotes the interests of green capital and green technology over gray capital (extractive industries, fossil-fuel companies). He suggests real change needs a "Green Growth Alliance," made up of environmentalists, students, faith organizations, social justice activists, labor, and green businesses.

    With attention from both the executive and legislative branches in Minnesota, it is assured that legislation promoting green jobs will be introduced when the legislature convenes in 2009. The Green Jobs Task Force was created by the Legislature in 2008 (See Section 15 of Chapter 356) and has been meeting throughout the interim. Chaired by Senator Ellen Anderson and Representative Jeremy Kalin, the 24-member group is developing a statewide action plan to optimize the growth of the green economy. Governor Tim Pawlenty proposed a number of tax exemptions and credits as part of his "Green Jobs Investment Initiative" in November.
