He became Governor of Minnesota when Winfield S. Hammond died while in that office.

He was a member of Phi Betta Kappa, Delta Sigma Rho, and Order of Coif.

"Although he was considered a strong candidate to be Speaker of the House in his second term, Burnquist lost his bid for the position as he refused to promise appointments or in any way compromise his Independence." (A History of the Office of Attorney General, 1997)

"Burnquist left the office of Governor in 1921 and returned to the private practice of law. He ran unsuccessfully as a Republican candidate for the United States Senate in 1923 and 1928 and in 1930 for Governor. Seventeen years after his term as Governor, Burnquist reentered the political world and ran for the office of Attorney General." (A History of the Office of Attorney General, 1997)
