He was of Swedish ancestry.

He was born in a log home on a farm in Sacred Heart Township, Minnesota.

He called the first meeting of the group that created Land O'Lakes Creameries.

He was a Master Mason in the Ancient Landmark Lodge of St. Paul, a member of the Masonic Veteran Association of Minnesota, director of the American-Swedish Institute of Arts, Literature and Science; member of the Renville County Historical Society, and a member of the Ramsey County Garden Club.

He died from a heart attack in the City Council Chambers in St. Paul, Minnesota.

He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church, and Grace Lutheran University
Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
