Governor's Council on Children, Youth, and Families

Also known as:
Governor's Council on Families and Children (1984-1988)
Active dates:1984-1990
Function:

Advise the governor on the development of Minnesota state policies to strengthen and support parents in caring for children and to provide families with support services that contribute to children's well-being.

History:

On July 26, 1984, Governor Rudy Perpich met with the newly appointed Council on Families and Children to request that it continue the work begun in 1978 by an earlier Task Force on Families - to examine in depth the needs of Minnesota's families and children. Mindful of a narrow time frame, he also requested that the new Council prepare some recommendations for his review by November 1984.

In 1988, Gov. Perpich issued another Executive Order, changing the name of the council and expanding some aspects of its work.

According to the State Register, "the council was abolished effective April 1990."

Membership:

The Council consists t of the following members: the Commissioner of Human Services, Commissioner of Health, Commissioner of Education, Commissioner of Jobs and Training, Commissioner of Finance, and the Commissioner of State Planning or their designees. Two legislators may be appointed, one of whom shall be appointed by the Speaker of the House and the other by the Majority Leader of the Senate. Seven citizens-at-Iarge shall be appointed by the Commissioner of Human Services to serve as members
