History:
Since 1969 Minnesota's State Historic Preservation Review Board has reviewed properties for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), a federally -managed program recognizing the importance of local, state, and national history. The NRHP is one of several historic preservation programs created with passage of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the most comprehensive federal law pertaining to protection of historic resources.
During the 2017 legislative session, Governor Mark Dayton recommended that the Legislature transfer the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) from the Minnesota Historical Society to the Department of Administration. The Legislature mandated the transfer in the 2017 Omnibus State Government Finance law.
