Minnesota Biathlon Committee

Active dates:1984-?
Function: To promote the sport throughout the state.
History: The committee was named by Governor Rudy Perpich in advance of the 1985 North American Biathalon Championships, which were held at Giant's Ridge Biathlon Training Center near Biwabik on March 11-17, 1985.

In 1984, the Giant's Ridge Training Center was designated as the official training site for U.S. Ski Association biathletes.

The committee was charged with organizing the Championship event and developing a plan for promoting the sport in schools throughout the state.

A 1989 report by the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission stated that the Giant's Ridge Recreational Area "set the standard by which all future amateur sports facilities in Minnesota would be measured" and as a result, in 1987 Governor Rudy Perpich "accelerated the development of first-rate competition and training centers around the state," creating a new state agency, the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission. The report mentioned that the MASC would have committees for specific sports, like the one "at Giant's Ridge, where such a committee has been active for several years." It is presumed from this information that the Minnesota Biathlon Committee was superseded by the activities of the MASC sometime in the late 1980s.
