State Commission Against Discrimination
Safeguard the rights and privileges of and to provide for necessary services to Minnesota citizens. May make recommendations to agencies and officers of state or local subdivisions of government in aid of such policies and purposes in eliminating discriminatory practices based on race, color, creed, religion, or national origin; and make a written report of the activities of the commission to the governor each year and to the legislature at each session.
The State Commission Against Discrimination was created when the legislature amended the fair employment preactices act of 1955 to include a fair housing provision. The law was amended April 1961 and as of July 1, 1962 was known as the State Commission Against Discrimination instead of the Fair Employment Practices Commission.
SCAD worked closely with the Governor's Human Rights Commission in areas of concern to both groups.
The Commission shall consist of up to nine members, with at least one from each congressional district of the state of Minnesota; and at least one of whom shall be an attorney at law, appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the senate, for a term of five years to serve until a successor is appointed and qualified. The chair shall be designated by the governor.
