Board of Boxing

Also known as:
Wrestling and Boxing Board
Active dates:1975 - July 1, 2001
Function:

The board licenses boxers, seconds, managers, franchise holders and makes rules governing sparring and boxing exhibitions, which includes full contact karate and kick boxing.

History:

The Board's predecessors include the State Athletic Commission (1915-1973) and State Boxing Commission (1973-1975). The Athletic Commission's name was changed to the State Boxing Commission in 1973 and its membership expanded to seven (Laws 1973 c638 s52). In 1975 it became the Board of Boxing (1975 Minn. Laws Chap. 271). For a two year period, 1983-1984, Minnesota had a Board of Wrestling and Boxing.

The state's Boxing Board was recreated as the Minnesota Boxing Commission in 2006 (2006 Minn. Laws Chap. 282). It was officially renamed the Combative Sports Commission in the 2008 legislative session. The new name reflects the commission's expanded oversight of mixed martial arts events that was added to the commission's purview in 2007 (2007 Minn. Laws Chap. 135 Art. 3 Sec. 30 Subd. 8). The commission's purpose is to protect the health and safety of professional boxers and mixed martial arts fighters, and to ensure the fairness of both boxing and mixed martial arts events.

Membership:

7 members; appointed by governor; 4-year terms; per diem; members file with Ethical Practices Board.
