Originally, the Trade Office was situated in the Department of Commerce. In 1987, the Legislature moved the office under the purview of the Department of Trade and Economic Development, which in 2003 became the Employment and Economic Development Department (DEED).
In 1999, the Legislature transferred the work of the World Trade Center Corporation to the Trade Office (see Laws of Minn. 1999, chap. 223, art. 2, sec. 28, 66).
