The Trade and Economic Development Department (DTED) was created in 1987 through a law restructuring the Energy and Economic Development Department. The energy-related responsibilities of the Energy and Economic Development Department were transferred to the Public Services Department. In 2003, Governor Tim Pawlenty merged the Minnesota Department of Economic Security (MDES) and the Department of Trade and Economic Development (DTED) to form the Employment and Economic Development Department (DEED).
