Professional Sports Franchises Advisory Task Force

Active dates:1994 - June 1, 1995
Function: The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission was mandated to create a task force to analyze the following factors:
(a) the economic disruption and worker dislocation that would occur in the event that a professional sports team would relocate;
(b) the dynamics and consequences of cities competing against each other for professional sports franchises; and
(c) the relative public costs of obtaining and keeping professional sports franchises.

The task force shall make findings and report to the legislature by February 1, 1995, on the overall impact of professional sports franchises on the state and recommendations on a policy the state should adopt with regard to obtaining and retaining professional sports franchises.
History: The Minnesota Legislature originally established a task force to study the issue of professional sports franchises and their impact on Minnesota in 1994, as a part of the Target Center legislation (1994 Minnesota Laws, Chapter 648). However, due to various factors, the task force was not able to fulfill its duties, and the legislation establishing the task force expired. The Advisory Task Force on Professional Sports in Minnesota was then established by the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission to perform such a study. For more information, please see their agency record for a link to their final report in 1996.
