Physician Assistant Advisory Council

Active dates:1986 -
Function:

Advises the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice on the regulation (including registration) of physician assistants, the complaint and discipline process, and distribution of information regarding standards.

History:

Physician Assistants were initially registered in Minnesota in 1987 and governed by rules promulgated by the Minnesota Department of Health, per the general authority granted to the Board of Health by 1976 Minn. Laws Chap. 222 Sec. 8.

This advisory council sunsetted June 30, 1993 (see 1993 Minn. Laws Chap. 337 Sec. 1), (though the 1994-1996 Biennial Report from the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice states the council sunsetted on June 30, 1994). It was reinstated by 1995 Minn. Laws Chap. 43. The Physician Assistance Advisory Council was then codified by name in statute with the passage of 1997 Minn. Laws Chap.120 Sec. 1 and the council, among other advisory councils, was exempted from the automatic expiration to which it had previously been subject by the passage of 1997 Minn. Laws Chap. 192 Sec. 1.

The Physician Assistant Advisory Council was reviewed by the Legislative Commission on Planning and Fiscal Policy (LCPFP) in 2013 as part of their biennial duty required by Minn. Stat. 3.885 Subd. 11. The LCPFP's 2013 Recommendations called for keeping the council.

Membership:

Seven members serve on the council: two public members, as defined in section 214.02; three physician assistants licensed under this chapter who meet the criteria for a new applicant under section 147A.02; and two licensed physicians with experience supervising physician assistants. Members serve four-year terms.
