Indian Scholarship Committee

Function:

Advise the Minnesota State Board of Education concerning awarding scholarships to American Indian students and administering the board's duties regarding American Indian postsecondary preparation grants to school districts.

The State Board, with the advice and counsel of the Minnesota Indian Scholarship Committee, may award scholarships to any Minnesota resident student who is of one-fourth or more Indian ancestry, who has applied for other existing state and federal scholarship and grant programs, and who, in the opinion of the board, has the capabilities to benefit from further education. Scholarships shall be for advanced or specialized education in accredited or approved colleges or in business, technical or vocational schools.

The Committee was set to expire on June 30, 2001.

15 members (including representatives of the Duluth, Minneapolis, and Bemidji areas, the Bureau of Indian Affairs higher education office, the Minnesota Chippewa and Sioux tribes, and the Red Lake education division); appointed by Board of Education with assistance of Indian Affairs Council; terms determined by Board of Education; reimbursement of expenses governed by Minn. Stat. 15.059.
