Elections
Historically, Minnesota has enjoyed high voter turnout in general elections. In 2018, Minnesota ranked number one in the country with a voter turnout of 64.25%. The Library has several new election related books, and there’s still time to read them before the 2020 General Election.
Turnout: Making Minnesota the State That Votes, a memoir by former Secretary of State, Joan Anderson Growe and former Star Tribune editorial writer, Lori Sturdevant, explores the traditions and policies that have made Minnesota one of the top voter turnout states in the country. As the cover hints at, students of Minnesota history will remember that our iconic red “I voted” stickers were introduced during her time in office. Growe shares personal reflections of her time as Secretary of State, but this book is also a look at the political history of Minnesota's fair and open elections.
America Votes!: Challenges to Modern Election Law and Voting Rights, an American Bar Association publication, looks at a variety of election issues including voter registration, recounts, redistricting, and equal protection. The publisher reflects: "Each edition of America Votes! explores issues of concern and problems that threaten the security and fairness of the American electoral system. There is much that needs to be done across a whole host of issues to restore confidence in the fairness, equity, and security of the voting process in communities across America. This edition describes in detail what these issues are"
Finally, if massive amounts of election data are your thing, the Minnesota Historical Election Archive is a new and noteworthy searchable database containing 160 years' worth of election results in Minnesota, including most legislative races.
