Child Care Costs
The child care landscape is changing. Nationwide, data shows the net number of child care centers has been growing and the net number of family child care homes has been shrinking over the last several decades. The steep cost of child care is a frequent topic of conversation both at the Minnesota legislature and in households around the state. In rural areas, options can be fewer and the challenge to find affordable, good care more daunting. The Library recently received three reports that focus on this topic.
Status of Child Care in Minnesota (February 2019). The Minnesota Department of Human Services’ Licensing Division, Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), and Parent Aware Quality Rating and Improvement System all support access to safe, healthy and quality child care and early education programs. This mandated report provides information about all three programs, including data on licensing trends, changes to statutes and rules impacting child care, and department efforts and recommendations in continuing to improve child care for Minnesota families.
The Economic Impacts of the Child Care Shortage in Northeastern Minnesota: Opportunities to Partner on Solutions (July 2018). Wilder Research studied the child care shortage and its economic impacts in the seven-county region of Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis counties. The funders of the study were interested in potential public, private, and collaborative solutions to the child care shortage. As a part of the study, Wilder examined what employers in the region and in other parts of Minnesota are currently doing to help their employees gain access to child care.
The U.S. and the High Cost of Child Care (2018). Child Care Aware of America's 12th edition of this annual report updates their interactive Cost of Child Care Map which allows users to examine the cost and affordability of child care across states. New to this year’s map is county-level data for nine states, including Minnesota.
