"Another [recruit] was John Milne, who was left for dead after the battle [at Bull Run] and lay 'dimly conscious from loss of blood' for forty-eight hours before a Confederate burial party picked him up. He was 'jarred' in great pain to Richmond, Virginia, in a train of cattle cars. In the confederate capital, Milne had the good fortune to meet another prisoner, Dr. Jacob H. Stewart of St. Paul, the regimental surgeon. Stewart dressed Milne's wounds and helped him recover sufficiently to be exchanged." (Minnesota in the Civil War, St, Paul, Minn.: Minnesota Historical Society, 2000, p. 7.)
He settled in Minnesota in 1857. He lived in Lebanon, Dakota County, Minnesota before the United States Civil War. He later moved to Duluth, Minnesota.
