    The St. Paul newspaper traditionally listed members who won the election with party affiliation (Democrat or Republican). In 1862 they only identified the Democrats, the assumption is that the rest were Republicans. Since he wasn't identified as a Democrat, the assumption is that he was a Republican.     He "was educated at Lewisburg, Virginia, in an institution of a high order, under the management of Rev. John McHeleny, graduating in 1827. He read law with Addison McLaughlin, at Summerville, Nicholas county, West Virginia; was admitted to practice in 1829." (U.S. Biographical Dictionary Minnesota, 1879).
