    GENERAL NOTES

    He came to St. Paul, Minnesota in May 1852.

    He served as Judge Advocate at the trial of 303 Indians after the Sioux War of 1862-63. (Minnesota in Three Centuries, and A History of the City of St. Paul to 1875, 1983 edition, by J. Fletcher Williams, p. 391). In his book, History of the Sioux War and Massacres of 1862 and 1863, Heard says he "acted as the Recorder of the Military Commission which tried some 400 of the participants in the outbreak."

    He was an advocate for the creation of the state reform school.

    He is interred in Oakland cemetery in St. Paul.
