GENERAL NOTES

Toensing list his last name as Boal. History of Minnesota and Tales of the Frontier, 1900 lists his last name as McBoal. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1889 lists his name as James McC. Boal. Minnesota in Three Centuries, p. 442 states "James McClelland Boal - called Jimmy McBoal by the old settlers, which version of his name has been miscalled and perpetuated by naming a St. Paul street for him, and in other ways." His great great grandson says "McBoal's name is nearly always misspelled in historical literature,
including Territorial documents. The correct version is James McLelland
Boal."

The History of Minnesota: from the Earliest French Explorations to the Present Time, 1873 lists his age when he served in the 1st Territorial Session as 38. So he must have been born around 1811.

He served at Fort Snelling in 1833 and moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1846. He later moved to Mendota, Minnesota.

His party affiliation was provided by his great great grandson who stated, he "was a Whig throughout his terms in the Legislature."

He was a charter member of the Republican Party of Minnesota. It was organized around 1855. (Minnesota in Three Centuries, p. 443)

He died in Mendota, Minnesota.
