He moved to Ontonagon, Michigan to live with his uncle around 1865, after his parents died. He came to Minnesota in 1887. He moved to Virginia, Minnesota in the early 1900s.

He was a member of the Elks and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

He died at home in Virginia, Minnesota. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Virginia, Minnesota.
