He was the Republican endorsed candidate for Minnesota Governor in 1962.  He lost his reelection bid by 91 votes. (MHS Governors of Minnesota)
He was a member of the Republican Party.
His body was lain in state at the Minnesota State Capitol rotunda on November 18, 2004.  His funeral was held at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
