He ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party endorsed candidate for the Minnesota House of Representatives in the 1978 election. His opponent, Tom Rees, defeated him by 22 votes so an automatic recount occurred. The recount confirmed that Tom Rees had won.

He ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party endorsed candidate for Minnesota Senate District 16 in the 2012 election.
