    He ran unsuccessfully as a Liberal candidate for the Minnesota Senate in the 1972 election. His opponent, Melvin "Mel" E. Hansen, defeated him by 32 votes so a recount occurred. The recount confirmed that Melvin "Mel" E. Hansen had won.
