She ran unsuccessfully as the Republican party endorsed candidate for the Minnesota Senate in the 2002 election. Her opponent, Dan Sparks, defeated her by so few votes that an automatic recount occurred. The recount confirmed that Dan Sparks had won by 5 - 7 votes.
