He ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party endorsed candidate for the Minnesota House of Representatives in the 1990 election. His opponent, Hilda Bettermann, defeated him by 27 votes so an automatic recount occurred. The recount confirmed that Hilda Bettermann had won. She was declared the winner by 48 votes.
