He came to the United States with his parents and settled near Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the spring of 1844.
"He enlisted in the Twenty-fourth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry in August, 1862, was taken prisoner at the battle of Chickamauga, and incarcerated in both Andersonville and Libby prisons." (History of Goodhue County, Minnesota)
He moved to Red Wing in 1873 after selling his farm in Racine, Wisconsin.
