His father was of Norwegian ancestry.
The Minnesota Legislative Manuals, 1881 and 1887 list his nativity as Norway. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1889 states that he was born in Sweden but "his father being a Norwegian, however, he was brought up on a farm in Norway."
He came to the United States in 1867. He moved to Minnesota in 1869. He settled on a homestead near Crookston, Minnesota in 1872.
He built the first house in Crookston, Minnesota. (Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1889, p. 623)
