He was of Dutch ancestry.
He moved to New Jersey around 1826, with his mother. They later moved to Brooklyn, New York City, New York. He moved to Ohio in 1845. He then went to Scott County, Iowa in 1850. He came to Meeker County, Minnesota in 1855 and staked a land claim. He moved there in the spring of 1856. He moved to Litchfield, Minnesota in 1875.
