His family came to Minnesota in 1878 and settled in Otter Tail County near Dalton.

Toensing lists his birth year as 1872. In Memoriam, the Minnesota Legislative Manuals and the Minnesota Journal of the Senate March 31, 1965 list 1871.

In Memoriam lists him as Speaker Pro Tem in 1921. That must be a typo, all other sources indicate that he served for two days as President Pro Tempore in 1921.

He taught in rural schools in Otter Tail County, Minnesota and Grand Forks County, North Dakota.

The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1915 lists his middle initial as A. but all other sources list O.

"He was the chief author of the bill that gave women the right to vote." (In Memoriam, 1965, p. 20)

The Minnesota Senate Journal, April 8, 1953, p. 1578, indicates that he was "called 'The Napoleon of Woman Suffrage.'"

He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Minnesota Legislature in 1896 and 1898.

He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Minnesota House of Representatives in the 1902 election.

He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican Party endorsement for the United States Senate in 1924. He lost the endorsement in the primary election.

He died at the Broen Memorial Home. His funeral was held in the Lutheran Church in Dalton, Minnesota. He is buried in Sarpsborg Lutheran Cemetery in Dalton, Otter Tail County, Minnesota.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dalton, Minnesota.
