Family Members Who Have Served in the Minnesota Legislature:
According to his great great great grandaughter, he changed his last name to Haslerud, the name of his farm in Norway, in 1863. When he was appointed by the Governor to the Minnesota Committees of Immigration in 1865 his last name was incorrectly listed as Hasalind. She also states that he "became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America in 1871."
He moved to the United States in 1843. He was thought to have lived in Illinois before he moved to Primrose, Dane County, Wisconsin in 1848. He came to Fillmore County, Minnesota in July 1853.
The St. Paul newspaper traditionally listed members who won the election with party affiliation (Democrat or Republican). In 1862 they only identified the Democrats, the assumption is that the rest were Republicans. Since he wasn't identified as a Democrat, the assumption is that he was a Republican. (St. Paul Pioneer and Democrat, January 7, 1862)
The city of Peterson, Minnesota was named after him.
He died from tuberculosis in Peterson, Fillmore County, Minnesota. He was buried in the Arendahl Cemetery in Peterson, Minnesota.
