Toensing lists his death year as 1958(?). His obituaries in the Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press say he died on October 30, 1992 at the age of 103. Another article indicates that he was still alive in 1987.

He was of German ancestry on his father's side.

He was a member of the Lions Club, Elks, and Masonic Lodge.

He died at Greeley Health Care Center in Stillwater, Minnesota. His funeral was held at Ascension Episcopal Church in Stillwater, Minnesota.
