Toensing and the Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1874 list his last name as McDonnell. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1876 lists both McDonnell and Donnell. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1875 lists McDonald and McDonnell.
He moved to the United States in 1852, settled in New York. He moved to Dubuque, Iowa around 1853. He went to St. Louis, Missouri in 1859. He came to Houston County, Minnesota in July 1861.
