He was born on a farm near Madelia but in Blue Earth County, Minnesota. He was the youngest of 10 children. He moved to the village of Madelia, Minnesota in 1892. He moved to Fairmont, Minnesota around 1915.
He was President of the Martin County Historical Society.
According to his memorial in the Minnesota Journal of the Senate, April 8, 1953, p. 1578, he was "called 'The Sturdy Little Yankee from Watonwan County.'"
