Toensing and the Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1870 list his first name as Orin. History of Goodhue County, Minnesota lists Orrin. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1871 lists both Orren and Orrin.

He also lived in New York and Wisconsin before he moved to Red Wing, Minnesota on May 8, 1857.

He drew up the Minnesota State school law of 1861. (History of Goodhue County, Minnesota. Chicago: H.C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., 1909, p. 757.)
