He moved to New York around 1836, with his parents. Then moved to Illinois when he was 16 years old, with his parents. He also spent some time in California. He came to St. Anthony, Hennepin County, Minnesota in the fall of 1854. He moved to Excelsior, Minnesota in the fall of 1860. He returned to Illinois in the fall of 1861. He came back to Excelsior, Minnesota in the spring of 1867.
