He was a member of the Moose Lodge and Chair of the Aitkin County Chamber of Commerce.

He died from a brain hemorrhage/stroke while elk hunting in the Gallatin Mountain Range in Montana. His funeral was held at the Aitkin United Methodist Church in Aitkin, Minnesota. He was buried in Fleming Cemetery.

He was a member of the Fleming United Methodist Church.
